Sort Function in SS
One of the commonly asked for features in our Spreadsheet was for a sort
function. This version of IBM Works accommodates that request. The sort
function can sort the entire SS or highlighted cells in the SS and can sort
alphabetically or numerically, in ascending or descending orders.

REXX Support for SS
Spreadsheet now allows users to evaluate their own functions through the REXX
scripting facility. This allows users to write a function, external to the
Spreadsheet, and have the value returned after the execution of a REXX
function. The facility allows a user to choose from several provided scripts,
or to write their own.

URL Support in WP
IBM Works now has the ability to launch the Web Explorer. If you have an
Internet communication application on your machine, IBM Works will launch it.

Updated WP Filters
The Import and Export filters are improved. IBM Works includes updates to the
filters:  MS Word, WordPerfect Version 5, DCA/RFT, DisplayWrite, MS Rich Text
Format, Ami Pro, Word for Windows, WordPerfect, WinWord and plain text

Snap to Grid in DB
The IBM Works Database now has a feature called Snap to Grid.  With this
feature you are able to align your work easier and more accurately than before.

Multiple Field Input in DB
The Database now allows you to enter multiple fields at one time, saving time
and aligning the text for you.

Import/Export Ability for PIM
The most frequent request for IBM Works PIM was to be able to Import data from
other applications into the IBM Works PIM. This function is now available.
This is also true for an Export function. IBM Works PIM now supports
Import and Export ability for .DBF (DBase) and .CSV (comma separated value) files.

Password Protection for PIM
IBM Works has a Phone Book, Appointment Book and a To Do List among its
features. This information can be of a private nature and therefore a
password protection has been added to these components. You now have the
option to protect this information from unauthorized users.

General Information

Drag and Drop Integration between IBM Works documents and PIM Tools

You can drag and drop one or more contacts from the Phone/Address Book or Contact List
onto documents created with any of the IBM Works components (word processor,
spreadsheet, chart, database or report writer).  You can also drag and drop a
contact list to a document to attach the contacts in the list to the document.

The documents that have contacts attached (dropped on them) will display their
icons with cards attached.

Using drag and drop to create a merged word processor document
You can use drag and drop to create a mail merged document!

Just drag and drop all or selected contacts from your Phone/Address book or
Contact List to a Word Processor document (object or open window) containing
merge fields.

The contacts will be merged with the document creating a merged set of
documents. Documents with contacts attached can be dragged and dropped on a
printer, or printed from the open document to produce a mail merge batch with
one document tailored for each contact. If you drag this merged document to
the fax, it will use the fax numbers associated with each contact to produce a
fax distribution as part of the mail merge.

You can drag and drop contacts onto a document icon or it's open window
to achieve the same result.

Using drag and drop to create a fax distribution list
When you drag and drop contacts that have fax numbers in their Phone Books onto
any IBM Works document, the result is an attached fax distribution list for the
document. Drag this document object onto the fax icon to fax the document to
the related contacts.

The program will look for the words fax or facsimile (lower or uppercase) in
the labels of the contacts phone numbers and identify the fax number among the
other phone numbers.

Options on the document settings page
For any of the IBM Works components with attached data, you can open the
settings notebook to review, modify or delete contacts.

You can attach data to any of the following:  contact list, report writer,
database, chart, spreadsheet, or document.

The document can be set to open on receipt of new contacts or to print
automatically when contacts are dropped on it.

Drag and drop between IBM Works components
You can drag and drop selected text and graphics from charts and spreadsheets to the word processor, another chart, or another spreadsheet.

By default, drag and drop copies information. Using the CTRL+SHIFT keys in
conjunction with the drag and drop you can achieve a paste-link between a
spreadsheet and a document.

If a document contains an embedded chart, you can double click on the chart
object to call up the chart application.

IBM Works uses OS/2 Standards
For those of you who are new to OS/2, this section will walk you through the
basics of working with IBM Works under OS/2. It will give you instructions on
how to perform basic actions that are common to all IBM Works components.

Folders, objects and templates
After you install IBM Works you will see a new folder on your desktop. Double
click with your left mouse button on this folder to open it up.

The open folder will display a selection of icons or pictures. Some icons
represent program objects and some icons represent templates. The templates
are displayed as yellow sticky pads with a small icon on them to remind you of
their type.
You can click on your right mouse button, hold it and move your mouse to drag
these templates to your desktop. This action will create a blank document
that is either a word processor document, spreadsheet, chart or other object
matching the type of the template that it was dragged from.

On your desktop there will also be a folder containing additional samples.
Double click using the left mouse button to open this samples folder.

Inside will be a selection of tailored IBM Works samples. These samples give
you an idea of the types of things you can accomplish with IBM Works. Files
showing an icon of a letter are samples of word processor documents. Files
showing an icon of a spreadsheet are samples of spreadsheet documents.

How to create a new letter
To create a new blank word processor document, right mouse click on the
document template and drag it to your desktop. Double click on the newly
created object to open it. Complete your letter.

When you close a document IBM Works will prompt you for saving details.

How to print or fax your letter using drag and drop
You can print or fax a document using drag and drop! You can print or fax
whether your document is open or closed.

When your document is open
On all open documents there is an icon in the upper left corner representing
the type of component. This icon can be dragged to a printer or fax icon, or
another document, if the document is an open window.

When your document is closed
With your mouse positioned on the closed document, click on your right mouse
button, hold it and move your mouse to drag this document to a printer icon.

Perform a similar action to drop a closed document onto a fax icon then follow
the fax software menus to complete the fax transmission.

Copy and paste using drag and drop
You can copy and paste by selecting the item and dragging it to the
destination document window.

Holding down the CTRL+SHIFT keys in conjunction with the right mouse button
will result in a paste link between information in a spreadsheet and a word
processor document.

This is the end of our general introduction to OS/2 for IBM Works users. For
more information on OS/2 please refer to the online assistance.
